Making An Impact – The Transformation of Patient Safety at The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital

“The Director of Patient Safety for The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital works to ensure that all pediatric patients receive safe, equitable, and quality care.” – Jillian L. Gregory, DO, Director of Patient Safety for BBCH

When families come to The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital (BBCH), they come with a deep-rooted trust that their little ones will be looked after with utmost care and compassion. They believe that we will help their children regain the joy and magic of their childhood. Our hospital has an incredibly sound reputation for skill, safety, and success in treating the children of our community. However, we believe in continuous improvement, and we strive to always do better. It is this commitment to excellence that led us, in 2023, to introduce a key role – the Director of Patient Safety. This pilot position was made possible by philanthropic support, and Dr. Jillian Gregory was chosen to lead this initiative.

As the Director of Patient Safety, Dr. Jillian Gregory leads quality and patient safety teams to implement the best evidence-based practices and medicines to care for our patients. In January of 2023, in order to bolster our commitment to safety, BBCH joined the Solutions for Patient Safety (SPS), a national safety network including 140+ hospitals worldwide. This network is dedicated to sharing researched methods to provide the best pediatric-specific care. Our safety committee proactively identifies safety concerns before incidents happen and continues to work with safety experts, staff, patients, and families in real time. We are growing our safety team and will continue to expand our safety protocols and quality efforts in the years to come, constantly earning and affirming the trust our patients and their families put in our team.

The Solutions for Patient Safety network operates under the mantra “no harm to any child,” and shares the best possible practices when administering care to pediatric patients. As the point person between the SPS and BBCH, Dr. Jillian Gregory plays a pivotal role in ensuring that the latest best practices are communicated to care team members and that the adoption of these practices is system-wide.

The generosity of our community enables us to bring about meaningful change and employ impactful people like our Director of Patient Safety. This ensures that we provide better, more cohesive care for our patients every day for years to come. We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude for your unwavering support. Your trust and partnership are truly invaluable as we continue to strive for excellence in pediatric care and safety.
